Forever, Without Fail (a wedding song for Heidi and Joe)

October 23, 2015 •

by Harper Phillips

We met, somehow you knew the secret handshake
You slid yourself in front of that other guy I don’t remember anymore
I loved your voice of gravel, southern honey
And we fell hard and fast and sweet when city lights blocked out the stars

And love, love, love
is all that I can see in your blue eyes
dimples that smile at me
so dear link your arm in mine
I’m your’s forever without fail

Darlin, you take the words I’ll get the notes right
and we’ll sing loud, and laugh, and drive thinking how funny that we are
We stop, and you grab cheetos and orange gatoraid
and I wanna cry ’cause you know me so well and you make my heart feel whole

And love, love, love
is all that I can see in your blue eyes
dimples that smile at me
so dear link your arm in mine
I’m your’s forever without fail

You’ve worked your way into all of my memories
And I recall your face in places that you never could have been
So since my brain seems to want you in all my moments anyways
How ’bout we plan on living all our sweet new reveries together instead

And love, love, love
is all that I can see in your blue eyes
So why don’t you marry me
so dear link your arm in mine
I’m your’s forever without fail

Wading

Its been three weeks since I last heard from you
twenty one days since I felt your pulse beat in my fingers
I can’t justify why inside my heart’s turned so many shades of blue
as much as I try there is something about you that lingers

While I am wading in the waves of you
wading in your waves
wading in the waves of you
with wrinkled toes I’ll stay till you can be brave

My dear, he’s sweet when he tells me he’s lucky he’s met me
Tipsy I mumble that’s something I wish that you knew
I fuzzily stare at that spot where we sat when you kissed me
Is it foolish to wish they made chapstick out of super glue

While I am wading in the waves of you
wading in your waves
wading in the waves of you
with wrinkled toes I’ll stay till you can be brave

Tomorrow I’ll pack up my uke and meet up with a new boy
but rocks in my stomach will keep me from drifting from you
my heart fills with dread when I think about finding a new joy
so hard to accept when there’s really not much you can do

While I am wading in the waves of you
wading in your waves
wading in the waves of you
with wrinkled toes I’ll stay till you can be brave

Fully Wise

You’re searching for your daily bread, my love
In a skinny boy’s pantry?
Make yourself a cup of tea, my love
cause that boy’s much to dumb to eat

I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully wise
I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully mine
I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully wise
I won’t let you out until I feel the love inside you rise

Hunger pains, and you can’t sleep my love
tangled in his thin, cold quilt
you seek honey from his lips my love
but you’ll find nothing more than spit

I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully wise
I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully mine
I won’t let you out until you’re fully baked and fully wise
I won’t let you out until I feel the love inside you rise

Crumbs only burn up in the fire my love
make you believe that you are starved
you are everything you need my love
and your timer’s almost buzzed

Etta James

Do you remember when you took my hair down on the bus
elephant foot prints in the butter
you bet me that I couldn’t not smile for a little while
I lost because we were together
So wrap me up in clover
and call me Etta James
Cause since I fit my hand in yours
I’ve never been the same
Do you remember when your smile soothed this fearful heart
milk paint and welding in the summer
we stood on flagstone, seat s 17, you were so sweet
I thought I’d never love another
So wrap me up in clover
and call me Etta James
Cause since I fit my hand in yours
I’ve never been the same
Do you remember when our fingers danced and I was home
“sweet cakes and milk shakes” I surrendered
True love is more than Stanislavski and some Crest White Strips
So I will have to find another
